Leadership Development | Cohorts

Since 2000 Leadership Development Resources, LLC has worked with several hundred churches ranging from 30 to more than 5000 in average attendance. The results have been extremely positive and similar, regardless of location or context - city or rural, large or small. Churches completing the process are more likely to be healthy and growing than churches not involved.

I began the Cohort program very skeptical and fearful that I would merely be cloned by large church mentality. However, I attended to give the Holy Spirit an opportunity. While I haven't grasped all of the teaching, what I have learned has changed my life, my perspective, and my ministry, and our church. Each session has contained something that has changed my thinking.

Our church was asking, "If we are to be the church Jesus wants us to be in our community, what would that look like?" "How do we make the changes that will matter?" Cohorts helped us answer those questions, and build a strategy to pursue the changes that needed to take place.
» Dave Benson, Family Life Church, Newberg, Oregon

The most valuable part for us was the development of what has become our ministry model. Cohorts inspired us to develop an environment in our church that we call Starting Pointe, which has already helped nearly 100 people who were new to the church get involved in the life of the church through church membership and small groups.

What is Cohorts?

Cohorts is groups of pastors along with their church leaders who meet 5 times per year for personal and church leadership development and growth. The cohorts involve peer mentoring with a coach in a 2-year development cycle.

The Foundation Phase comprises five components:
Mission. What is God leading us to do? What is our mission?
Core Values. Who has God shaped us to be?
Purposes. Based on Scripture, why do we exist as a church? What are the functions of a New Testament church?
Congregational Realities. Who are we now? Who makes up our church?
Community Context. What is our community like? Who makes up our ministry area? What are the unchurched like?

The Design Phase incorporates five considerations:
Identify missional focus. Who is God calling us to reach?
Identify primary strategies for each purpose. What strategies does God want us to use ?
Identify the ministry model. How does God want us to do church?
Identify worship service style. What style of worship is appropriate for our mission?
Identify minimum health factors. What do we need to strengthen to reach our full Kingdom potential?

The Implementation Phase includes developing an implementation plan for the next two years.
